Hardscape design
The bones of a great yard
Hardscape design plans the hard surfaces of your yard, the patios, walkways, walls, steps, and fire features, as one connected layout instead of pieces bolted on one at a time.
Vista has designed and built hardscapes across Northwest Arkansas for 40 years, from concrete and block walls to full outdoor rooms. We think through materials, drainage, and how you move through the space, then price the whole layout before we build.

What counts as hardscape, and why design it together?
Hardscape is everything built rather than planted: patios, walkways, driveways, retaining walls, steps, edging, and fire features. Designing them together matters because they share structure. The walkway grade affects the patio height, the wall placement changes where water goes, and the materials need to match across all of it. Design them one at a time and the seams show. Vista plans the whole built layer as part of our Springdale landscape design services, so every hard surface fits the one next to it and the planting ties it together.
How do you choose hardscape materials that last here?
Northwest Arkansas freezes, thaws, and dumps heavy rain, so materials and base work matter more than the catalog photo. Concrete pavers, natural stone, and block each have jobs they are best at, and all of them fail over a weak base. We spec materials rated for freeze-thaw, design the base and drainage into the plan, and follow the hardscape practices published by the Concrete Masonry and Hardscapes Association. The result is a surface that looks as good in year ten as it did the week we finished it.

Call (479) 799-9572Does hardscape design include the planting around it?
It should, because hardscape without planting reads cold and unfinished. The stone gives the yard its structure, and the beds soften every edge: boxwood framing a walkway, groundcover spilling over a wall, a tree shading the patio it anchors. We design both layers at once so they share lines and proportions. If your project starts more with the overall vision than the stone itself, begin with a landscape design consultation and we will shape the whole property, hardscape and planting together, before pricing the build.
Can you design hardscape for a sloped yard?
Slopes are where hardscape design earns its money. Steps turn a scramble into an entrance, walls carve flat usable space out of a hillside, and terraced patios turn the grade into a feature instead of a problem. The design has to solve structure and water first, because a slope moves both. We lay out the levels, set the wall heights, and plan the drainage behind every structure, then build it in the right order. If your yard falls away from the house, a good hardscape plan is the difference between using it and looking at it.
FAQs
Frequently asked landscaping questions
How much does hardscape design cost in Springdale?
The estimate is free, and design is priced with the project. You get one written number for the layout and the build, so there are no surprise design bills.
Do you design and build, or just design?
Both, together. The crew that plans your hardscape is the crew that builds it, which is how the finished yard stays true to the drawing you approved.
What materials do you work with?
Concrete pavers, natural stone, block, and poured concrete. We match the material to the job and your home, and we are honest about what fits your budget.
Can hardscape fix a drainage problem?
Often, yes. Walls, grading, and permeable surfaces can redirect water as part of the design, so the fix is built in rather than patched on later.
Do you handle drainage in the design?
Always. Every patio, wall, and walkway is designed with the water in mind first, because hard surfaces change how rain moves across your whole yard.
How soon can the project start?
It depends on the season and our schedule. We give you an honest start window with the estimate, and the build timeline is weather depending.
